Weird USB issue while playing FM on PC
So I'm having big issues with Forza Motorsport on PC, and they've been going on longer than I thought throughout different configurations of my setup. When playing the game, as soon as I get into a race, within my first few laps sometimes I will lose anything from just audio output, to every single USB device on my computer going unresponsive. When I lose just audio, unplugging and replugging my USB audio source will restore it, but sometimes it happens again immediately after maybe a minute. When I lose everything, no amount of unplugging and replugging will solve it. I have to force power off the machine because I have no other convenient way to interact with it despite it visually still running. This sounds like some general hardware issue but ONLY happens with Forza Motorsport, not in any other application or game. This is a massive long shot but I am going to give as much detail and context as I can in case anyone has any ideas.
--- The painful details:
I got a new laptop back in August (I don't want to hear the slander, yes I pack it up and take it with me for work every single day). It's an Alienware M18 R2 with an i9-14900HX, 64GB of RAM, and a 4090. I started playing the new FM again to enjoy the new PC and did all of the main singleplayer races before giving it a rest. I would frequently get audio dropouts while playing and would have to unplug and replug my Sound Blaster E1 USB DAC. I started using my onboard sound and the issues went away. I "finished" the game and stopped playing.
I then added a few things to my setup. I have a Behringer 1204USB mixer board with built in sound card and two Ugreen USB DACs. I have these as part of a home studio because I am a community FM radio DJ (important to the story). I had these on a separate machine in a separate location but in the end decided to consolidate to one desk setup. I also run with an external monitor over USB-C to DP, then I have my Logitech mouse and Corsair keyboard. These are all hooked up to a USB hub so I can easily just have one USB to unplug when taking my laptop to work every day.
I bought a Logitech G923 racing wheel, pedals and shifter, and started playing FM again with friends. The audio dropout issues started again, except it got worse as aforementioned and now a significant portion of the time I play the game I have to either replug my mixer board or totally force power off and restart my PC. Sometimes it doesn't happen, sometimes it happens 2-3 times in a row before I get good luck and can play for a few hours, go to bed, rinse and repeat and encounter the same issue the next night.
I replaced my USB hub with another powered one--no luck, it still happens. The old one is now still happily in service in my office at work with no issues. I do plug the G923 directly into the PC, not into the hub where everything else is. I tried unplugging the UGREEN DACs when I play because I don't really need all three USB sound cards when I'm just playing games. No luck, it still happens.
I never encounter this issue when on the radio for 3 hours straight, it's rock solid and I am actively using all three sound cards at once. I also never have any issue with other games. I've been playing Assetto Corsa, ACC, AC Evo, FH5 and never have this issue in those games. I of course never have this issue playing games where I don't use my wheel like Counter Strike either.
So I know it's not the sound card(s) because it happened on my old sound card, and unplugging 2 of my 3 current ones doesn't fix it. I know it's not the wheel because it happened before I bought the wheel. And it only happens on Forza Motorsport, not when I am playing other games / applications still utilizing multiple USB devices. It also only seems to happen shortly after I enter a race--it doesn't happen on the main menu while waiting for friends to load in, it waits until I start a race and load in and start driving.
I have tried disabling spatial audio and audio effects for my main audio output. Both in Windows (because for some reason it keeps reenabling Atmos for Headphones) and Spatial Audio in Forza settings. I'm not sure what else to do at this point. But again, it isn't the sound card(s), it isn't the USB hub, it isn't the wheel or controller, and it doesn't happen in any other game or application even when heavily utilizing USB devices.
If anyone has any ideas, even if they've heard of any adjacent issues, I would appreciate it so much because I love this game but am at my wits end.
