CFI pay

How much do CFIs make? Just thinking about the cost from PPL through getting into a regional role and starting to earn money (assuming that’s the spot you really start earning). Seems like an exorbitant cost to get there. I figure you spend a few years building time as a CFI, so how much does it pay?
