Is this how layers are supposed to look on thick hair?

A couple weeks ago I asked for layers and the stylist kept touching it up but it looks really weird to me. It’s straightened in the picture but it still looks pretty blunt and poofy when it’s wavy (natural). Is it just not possible for my hair or is the stylist inexperienced?
