The ending of the manga was terrible

The world is magically restored instead of humanity working hard to rebuild it.

And Shinji and Asuka lost their memories, there was no evolution, there was no chance to learn from past mistakes to evolve. At the end of The End of Evangelion, just because Shinji accepted reality, doesn't mean everything will change quickly.

Shinji will have the chance to learn from his mistakes.

It reminds me of the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, when Joel and Clementine decide to erase their memories of each other and they meet and start a new relationship. Memories, even if they bring a little initial pain, are important for evolution. Forgetting the past means that we can repeat the same mistakes again.
