Anyone tried using the heated bed to dry filament?
I made the classic rookie mistake of not having proper storage for my filament, just leaving it sitting out, and now I'm getting the apparently classic popping sounds while printing and the uneven prints. I already ordered some desiccant packs and an airtight storage container, but do I need to do something to actively dry out my existing filament?
The cheapest "hot boxes" I've seen are running >$60 or so, but I read somewhere that it's possible to just use the bed to dry filament by setting it to ~40C, dropping the spool right on the bed and putting something like a box over the filament to keep the heat in, letting it sit for a couple hours. You are apparently supposed to do this prior to putting the filament in storage with desiccant?
Or is just sticking it in an airtight container with the desiccant going to be enough to dry it out on its own?
Edit: We are still in the bleak midwinter so the humidity in my room is actually quite low, a monitor I have running shows it at around 20%RH. But after only a few days of my filament sitting out I'm definitely getting popping noises during printing and some uneven print lines and stringing.
