School enrolment guidance please

My daughter is starting school in the next academic year. Kindly someone guide me through this admission process. How many schools should I apply to secure a seat for my daughter? Do they refund the application fees if seats r not secured. Is it really difficult to get a seat if I apply to only couple of schools?
