What do most people believe caused the Cataclysm?

So far as the lore in the novels goes, at the time of the War of the Lance, what do most people in Ansalon believe caused the Cataclysm?

The Dragonlance wiki states "it is widely believed that the Cataclysm occurred as a result of the Kingpriest's overweening ambition." Widely believed by who? By the general populace? I thought there were several other public explanations, and I'm not sure which holds the most sway:

  • The public view of high sorcerers (which had never been great) had been so diminished by the Cataclysm that they were blamed by many.
  • The Knights of Solamnia are widely blamed at least for not preventing the Cataclysm (due to Lord Soth's failure), if not for causing the Cataclysm itself, and it would be believable that over time that bit of nuance would be lost and they would be blamed for the Cataclysm itself.
  • Finally, and this one appears not widely known, since the Companions need to be told it: At the end of the Chronicles series, Fizban tells the Companions that the pendulum had swung to far to the side of good and would swing back to the evil side, and the Cataclysm was necessary to prepare the world for the fight ahead so that evil might not triumph forever (DoSD, Book 3, Ch. 14).

If the Kingpriest is in fact widely blamed by the general public, what do they tend to say his error was? Was it attempting to command the gods? Or was it abandoning the doctrine of balance by attempting to cleanse the world of evil? (these are two very different things; you could easily have one without the other). Or is it something else?
