Americans—How frequently have you been asked for proof of onward travel and in which countries?

I’ve done a fair bit of international travel and I’ve never been asked. I’ve been asked how long I’m staying for and I always give a concrete answer even if I’m unsure, but they’ve never asked to see my ticket, so I’m curious if this is something I should be more worried about
