Why do some guys do this?

There's been multiple times where I've heard from random mutuals about me dating guys who I've never spoken to for more than 5mins(literally )and I've actually never dated nor did I have a talking stage /situationship with any of them and they were just lying about it... Is there a reason why they do such thing?
