Chisos #1 Boot Review/Size Rec

Let me start by saying I’ve had boots and true leather good type of shoes as part of my life for a long time. I understand the break in process and care that goes into quality leather, which Chisos definitely uses in its boots. I must say, though, the break in for these boots is much more extensive than advertised.

Once again, I’m used to breaking in boots and shoes. My first pair of Tony Lamas I saved for and bought in high school way back in 2015 beat the heck out of my feet when I was wearing them everyday for the first two weeks. Now, nearly a decade later, they are the most comfortable and form-fitted footwear I have ever worn. Same process with my classic timberland boots, Allen Edmonds dress shoe and others.

Out of boot brands I own (not exclusive to western), Chisos probably stands at the top for the best quality and best all around durability/application out of my boots. For reference, I own Lucchese, Justin, Tecova, Thursday, Timberland and Tony Lama… but these Chisos stand above the rest.

The finish and artisanal work placed in these durable and beautiful boots is something to behold. The leather is a stunning and rich natural brown with so much character. The outsole is robust and expertly crafted.

Here’s the thing though, they are work to break in, as you would expect with other leather footwear. I was genuinely even in pain at times and this was after I upped my size from the usual 11D to 11.5D from how squished my foot felt in the 11. This is likely because of the larger size of the Chisos proprietary insole, but let me tell you my feet felt soreness wearing these boots and especially when I took them off.

After 5-10 minutes of wear, my feet would be screaming and I’d need to take the boots off to let my feet breathe. Then I’d put them back on and after 20-30 more minutes of noticeable discomfort, I would usually be good for the rest of the day with the worst amount of pain having been surmounted. It must also be said when I got home I’d take these off and hobble around in a pair of crocs to give my feet a chance to rest.

After wearing these boots every chance I could indoors and outdoors, even briefly jogging in them to make an appointment in time, I can now say they fit the descriptions people have shared, and Chisos has featured, in reviews.

My overall note/summary: if you have a wide foot like me, be ready for a somewhat challenging but worthwhile break in period. Get a half size up and once you get through the about month (30-50 hours of regular wear) you will love these boots and have trouble choosing any other out of your rotation. Miles may vary, but if you’re looking for an out of the box comfortable and break-in free boot, these aren’t for you. If you expect what often comes with durable and lasting leather footwear with a break in and some pain before bliss, then get you ice baths and wallets ready for a pair of Chisos.

Edit: they did not have any wide options when I purchased my boots.
