Advice for play that turns into actual fighting

I have two cats. My resident cat is approximately 2 and my newer cat, who I've had a month, is 10 months old. Both cats enjoy playing, but the young one is more energetic, playful, and chaotic. They didn't get a super gradual introduction because the little one kept escaping from her safe room and things seemed fine when she did.

I would say for the most part they get along really well. The little one tries to groom the older one all the time (though the older one isn't a fan of it), they sleep pretty close to each other other, they eat near each other other, etc.

The problem I'm having is with playing. They love chasing and wrestling each other. Usually, it looks like they're taking turns and the body language is mostly relaxed. But sometimes, things get pretty out of hand to the point where play devolves into what seems like fighting, because there's a lot of noise (yowling) and agressive tail flicking. They go back to being chill afterwards, but given the sounds, I'm worried one of them is going to get hurt. I'm also worried about letting it continue and whether this is a sign that we need to back up their interactions together.

I haven't found a lot of information on this because most of what I'm seeing is people confusing playing and fighting. I know their roughhousing starts as playing, but both are getting over excited and it's turning into a fight.

Any advice?
