How did we even get here with cat food?

Where did this idea that most cat food is made up of “fillers” even come from? When did we decide that supermarket brands aren’t good enough? Where is the evidence that they should be eating “human grade meat”? This all seems like a ton of marketing and scaremongering to me without much actual evidence, and yet it gets parroted around like it’s the truth?
