Are earrings on men actually unprofessional?

I'm a male engineering student and I want to get my ears pierced, but my parents have made it sound like I would look so unprofessional that I wouldn't be able to find a job with one pair of earrings in my ears. Does having earrings/body mods really make it harder to find a white-collar job?
