What are some life changing careers in disaster management?

Going into my senior year of college and the idea of sitting behind a desk is just not appealing. I find myself fascinated by the responses to fires, explosions, shipwrecks, hurricanes, earthquakes. My studies are in Earth Science and Political Science but would ideally be on the ground in a career and interacting with communities in need. Is there any way to do this without joining the military?
