[all] Did Rick Riordan regret Jason Grace?

I stopped reading after Heroes of Olympus ended a decade ago. I knew he wrote more books after but I didn't have any interest. Flashfoward, I decided to look up some characters. What the hell did Riordan do to Jason?

Apparently, Jason died. He and Piper had broken up, and to my understanding, the break-up itself isn't even in the books. Both girls who were interested in him were actually not interested in him: Piper's love was fake and then she got a girlfriend; Reyna was revealed to be ace. Zeus/Jupiter didn't mourn for him?

I'm sorry, what?! I remember the backlash with the protagonist change, but this (at least from what I've read online) feels almost like hatewriting and backtracking. Like he's taking everything from Jason and sweeping him under the rug. What was the intial fan response to all this? Did Jason have any good moments post-Heroes of Olympus? What were the other characters' reaction, like Percy or Leo?
