Want to splurge on new machine for video editing and gaming
Hello everybody.
Now that my 3080 is already 4 years old and struggling to properly run games on my 120 Hz 3840x1600 monitor - and now that I keep being frustrated with stutters and slow playback in Davinci Resolve, and now that my PC sometimes randomly just resets (~3 times a month) due to what I believe is just the 10 year old PSU giving out....it's time to finally r/buildapc (again)
I have a good enough income now and want to treat myself. Gaming is a big hobby for me, and I do have the video editing as well to justify it. Here's a rundown for what matters to me:
- I have a good income, but not fuck-you money. I still want this build to be somewhat reasonable - but also I expect to be using this machine as-is for at least ~3 years, so investing more makes sense imo
- I'd ideally like to be able to run current and future games at 90+FPS with most graphical settings on high/highest, occasionally raytracing. Some frame upscaling is OK though I'd love to see how far I could get with just raster rendering. But at least 1% lows should be close to average FPS.
- I don't care about running any AI on my machine natively - so I certainly don't need VRAM for that.
- I need the machine to do well for video editing. I am sick and tired of playback stutter while editing. I already have my material on SATA SSDs but my 5800x3D occasionally struggles, probably because of high bitrate source footage and sometimes overlapping footage/effects
- When recording my voice I want to minimize background noise. I want the machine to be as quiet as possible (at least in "Windows Mode"), while maintaining high performance. Still, when gaming/rendering I'd like it to be as quiet as possible also
- I don't care to do a lot of overclocking, but maybe I will do some undervolting and just mess around a bit.
- I'd love for the machine not to act as a space heater, so e.g. the RTX 5090 is not really an option for me. The energy costs are not a problem but I just hate how the PC can warm up a room in summer.
Given the above, I've been doing a bit of research and have come up with the following configuration:

Some further thoughts on the build:
- I know the RAM is overkill/bad value, but I saw that in some games faster RAM can significantly help with 1% lows. Plus considering I do content creation I figure high speed RAM probably won't hurt, and at the end of the day the price difference to "more reasonable RAM" is only ~50$. Do I need 48GB? Probably not now, but I do like having a bunch of shit open in parallel and just want to avoid ever being RAM bottlenecked. Happy to be educated otherwise
- I got the Samsung 990 Pro 4 and Samsung 970 Evo Plus on a good discount a while back. I plan on putting my OS on the 970 EVO Plus (should be fast enough) and using the 990 Pro 4 for games and video files. I'll probably connect 2 of the old SATA SSDs to the new machine, but that shouldn't change the build proposed here.
- I want a fancy motherboard for the visuals, extra M.2 slots, high speed WiFi (most of the time I run Ethernet, but occasionally need WiFi for LAN Parties)
- I am quite undecided on the case. In principle I love the Be quiet! Light Base 600 LX visually, but am concerned about suboptimal cooling leading to louder fans. I was also looking at the Antec Flux (with which I would replace the fans it comes with with be quiet! or Noctua fans. I already have a bunch of Noctua Fans that are currently in my "Cougar Panzer" case)
- The 9950X3D is probably the component I am most excited about. Pretty good single core performance, great for gaming performance, great for content creation. I am bothered by the high TDP, but I am planning on running it in ECO mode which brings its TDP close to the 5800X3D I have now, while performing on a similar level of as a 9900X
- I know the RTX 5080 will be hard to get, but let me worry about that. In any case I don't see any reasonable alternatives. With the absence of a 9700 XTX or a 5080 Ti I feel like the 5080 is the only choice for me - and I just don't want to wait another year for a hardware refresh.
