9700X or 9800X3D for competitive 1080P gaming in 2025?
Currently in the process of specing out a platform upgrade for my current build which is an i5 9600k paired with a 3060 TI and DDR4 RAM on a 1080p 144Hz Pixio monitor.
I play mostly competitive titles like Apex Legends, League, Overwatch and a lot of MMO time in both RS3/OSRS. Note I usually have either version of Runescape as a background game while I play anything else.
At $400 for 9700X bundle (ram, mobo, cpu) or $700 for a 9800X3D bundle what would people tend to lean towards?
Is the upgrade to the X3D chip worth it considering I mostly play CPU bound titles and could take advantage of the extra 3D V-cache or would it be not really noticeable? My understanding is that will help with 1% and 0.1% lows which deff are noticeable in competitive games. Can anyone speak to either side?
Either will be a huge upgrade over my current setup but I feel like the 9800X3D is the "longer lasting chip" and I might find myself wanting to upgrade CPU in the ~2 years if I get a better GPU (70 TI or 80 series).
Edit: For my use cases, would the $300 upgrade to the X3D chip a waste of money?
