Romance books with lots of angst?
Hi, I don't have enough karma to post on the romance books subreddit so here I am. Hopefully that's all right.
I'm looking for the kind of romance where the romance is not the main plot of the book OR it's not very in your face but is a lot more angsty. Basically I just finished reading 11/22/63 by Stephen king and I can't stop thinking about the romance, which was not the main plot (at face value) but ends up taking over the protagonists heart and ends up just shattering your heart by the end of the book. Those are generally the kind of love stories that really stick with me. Angst, yearning, things getting in the way of them being together, 'in another universe we could have had it all' type of vibe. I LOVE LOVE romances that take place in heavily politicised environments where there are so many bigger things going on and the romance between the two characters would have seemed like such a minuscule irrelevant thing to historians or the people around them, but the people involved were in their own world and that was all that mattered to them. So high stakes basically.
That's why books where the romance is supposed to be a second priority for the protagonist because they have something bigger going on but nevertheless it consumes them, is something I really enjoy. Do you all have any recommendations?
