Do you feel like teachers should issue a warning about books like "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"? By warning, I mean a simple, "What I am about to read reflects the time period, etc etc".
From my own experience, we read "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in class, and I had a white teacher who never issued any kind of warning or statement, to those who may have been unfamiliar with the book. He gave us the book, give a tiny bit of background on Twain and what our next book would be about. Then, he just started reading the first chapter. And when the N word came up, students looked surprised that he was saying it so casually and without warning about what the book would be getting into. This is the only part that bothered me
To be clear, I think it is important to remember our history. However, I feel like before readings these books, it's not hard to have a simple reminder, that words used in the readings are a reflection of the times back then. What do you think? Should teachers at least give a heads up?
