It is fucking bullshit that as a non-American I couldn't watch The Brutalist and I'm Still Here unless I live in NYC or LA and there's still no screeners for the film available on arr-matey places anywhere.
It is 2025 and the state of non-Americans wanting to watch Oscar-nominated films is getting worse than ever. I've seen every Oscar nominated Best Picture film except TWO that many people have considered to the best of the year: The Brutalist and I'm Still Here.
This is the first time in 33 years of my life that screeners and/or foreign releases for the entire Best Picture lineup is incomplete. I even learned Portuguese on Duolingo just to ask "'Ainda Estou Aqui' está disponível para transmissão no Brasil?" only to get responses by Brazilians angry at Walter Salles for not releasing the film straight to streaming for poor Brazilians.
Apparently The Brutalist might release on VOD on 25th February which is fine but it's also equally bullshit that a film that markets itself to resemble old cinema ala Nolan doesn't even allow the chance for non-Western audiences to watch the film on a big screen. It's fucking bullshit.
The Brutalist would've gotten Oppenheimer-levels of hype during the Oscar season if it had a worldwide release while I'm Still Here would've been the Anatomy of the Fall of this year's Oscar season if it also had an International release like AOAF did. It's no wonder why this current awards season is nothing but Emilia Perez and Wicked talk alongside bits and pieces of Anora and The Substance which are both good films. A24 and Sony Classics really fucked up.
