Best looking bad movies?

Watching all the Alien films this week. Thinking of Ebert’s quote that Alien3 is the best looking bad movie ever, what else does that apply to?

For starters, Alien: Resurrection is even messier and far worse in terms of plot and writing, but Darius Khondji did the cinematography, and it looks incredible. The underwater sequence blew my mind, it’s one of the most visually interesting things in this whole series. I don’t think I could call Resurrection good, so as an Alien 3 defender, I’d have to say this is an even better example of a bad movie that looks great.

I say this less about the direction and more about the digital VFX specifically, but I also think The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a good pick as I really don’t care for anything the movie has to say or do with the characters, but the visual effects on Electro (regardless of what you think of the character design) are remarkable, and the web swinging scenes are really dynamic.

In terms of production design, The Phantom Menace is probably up there as each location is pretty lavish and memorable. The weird industrial forcefield space that the Maul duel happens in is incomprehensible to me in terms of purpose but it does look stunning.

There are plenty of indie or more arthouse-centric movies that have great visuals, but I’m more interested in considering blockbusters or IP slop that some DP or art department inexplicably put their whole life into
