Why do we prune?

Idk where I heard this or how true it is which is why I bring this here…. A while back I was told before we evolved we lived in the ocean. Our fingers would prune so it would be easier to grip the ocean floor. Is this true?? This either sounds like the dumbest bs or the most interesting fact and I need to know the truth.
