Why does the Christian God torture his followers?

At my ex cult, they would always say that if something good happens, it is because of God's grace. If something bad happens, it is either a punishment for sin or a test of loyalty. For example, if your car broke down and needed $$$ repairs, it would either be a punishment for speeding (a sin), or a test to see if you remain faithful to God.

If you "love" your partner the way God allegedly "loves" us, you will be sent to prison for domestic violence.

Imagine hitting someone to test if they still love you. That's what God apparently does.
