Do people not freshen up before they hook up?

Today a guy I've been talking to for a bit invited me over to his, he has the day off and is hanging out at home. I'd love to, but I tell him I've just finished work and decline as there's nowhere for me to freshen up beforehand (he lives a few minutes away from work). He then says it's weird I keep talking about that (being my hygiene) and that he doesn't mind.

Do people seriously not freshen themselves up before hooking up with other guys?! I thought it was standard to at least have a shower and brush your teeth before doing anything with anyone else (unless you have a kink for certain scents)
