Trigeminal neuralgia, prolonged extraction healing or TMJ?
Dear Dentists,
I had a tooth that had a previous root canal (#18) that began hurting and eventually saw an endodontist who did a retreatment. I felt pain towards the end, she left the tooth open telling me if the pain returns it is likely the tooth is cracked and to see an oral surgeon for an extraction. I felt initially better then about 3 days in began feeling extreme pain again and ended up having the tooth extracted 6 days later. Two months later I began to feel pain in the tooth next to it #17. Went on antibiotics and saw an endodontist who couldn't determine if this was the source of the pain, she stopped the antibiotics in order to see if it was masking the pain. Pain came back saw an endodontist who could not find anything wrong with the tooth. She referred me to a periodontist who also couldn't find anything wrong and referred me to a neurologist thinking it is the trigeminal nerve. Reading about this was awful and scary and I can't get in to a neurologist so I'm waiting.
I have not used any pain meds or antibiotics and have only occasional achy jaw pain or slight nerve pain up towards my ear and some heaviness in my jaw.
Question - could this be a prolonged healing process form the extraction or does it sound like something more. I notice something there daily, but it has never been enough to think about needing pain meds. I'm very careful not to trigger the area. Time since extraction has now reached 6 months with about 2 months of symptoms - anything before I attributed to the healing process.
Any thoughts on what to do would be greatly appreciated. It has really stressed me out. Thanks.
