The Puella Magi Madoka Magica rewatch interest thread
Good afternoon, evening or good morning. Once again, I return to the rewatch sphere, after a long slumber. The air is filled with the jizz of plants, the weather can't be asked to choose a season so we get two a day, and I don't even know what the seasonal flavor is any more. But this time I am going a bit different: Today's exploration is the day I finally consider cohosting what is arguably the most influential modern anime, and certainly one of the more philosophical ones, in Madoka Magica. And by demand of the Jedi Council that I not be allowed unmonitored within 100 feet of any mascot, we are joined by cohost u/Tarhalindur!
What is Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica, Anyways?
Synopsis:
Having a loving family, close friends, experiencing times of joy and times of sadness. These are the things that make up an ordinary life. Kaname Madoka is a normal 2nd year middle-schoolgirl who lives such an ordinary life. Until, that is, a strange encounter occurs. She does not know if this encounter is coincidence, or the vagaries of fate, but two things are certain... This is the moment when her destiny changes... This is the start of a new magical girl story!

So why watch?
I could say come and join us for the wholesome magical girl adventures that await us... but most of you have some idea that there is stuff going on here under the surface so rather let's go with the other options. Madoka boldly approaches a lot of topics that usually start getting addressed in adolescence, many of which we face for life: What does one person owe to another? What responsibility does the single person owe to the city of strangers they live in? And it explores all this with a fairly lively setting and it unfolds itself at a consistent pace.
So how could this then be a Vaadwatch
Well...in its original state, I am not sure it is. But Madoka's mutant offshoots firmly are Vaad to sub-Vaad level so I guess their parents honorarily gets in. Also, as it stands, the media is currently unfinished, we are waiting for a fourth movie, theoretically this year, Walpurgisnacht, to finish the mobius strip.
(Tar: Madoka is what happens when an actually good writer makes a work that would ordinarily be Vaadwatch material, as evidenced by the fact that far too many of the offshoots veer straight back into Vaadwatch territory. Besides, I think IRL has us more than covered in the Vaadwatch department at the moment (inb4 the rewatch can't go forwards next year on account of thermonuclear fallout...), so maybe a change of pace is in order?)
The Hell am I announcing, anyways?
For quite some time now, we have had a run of community led rewatches. This is a user run experience wherein we go over some piece of older media, generally at minimum one year past but some go much further back than that, we just finished a run of 60s anime that was interesting if not exactly fun. We will be watching one episode a day from 4/20 through 5/01 going up at 5pm EDT, followed by a day for discussing the main series on 5/02, Rebellion discussion on 5/03, and an overall discussion on 5/04. However, I do hope that we can get more users in thread to respond over a broader time as that works for a limited group of people and good answers come up late.
But! This, dear listeners, brings us to the sworn enemy of creative response:The spoiler. Rewatchers, or people who just had plot points ruined for them, are obliged to use r/anime’s spoiler tag format where applicable, and err on the side of caution here. Remember people, first experiences get rarer as you continue on, any given one happens once and you should care for them all the more for it.
