Hosting in a non-tourist destination

My family is in the process of inheriting a house on a significant sized piece of land in northeastern Oklahoma. In the "country" but only 20ish minutes from a city of about 40,000. It needs some cosmetic work but is overall a great house. 3 bed/2 bath, private fishing lake.

The thought is to AirBnB it once the work is done but I'm wondering if any of you do so in an area that is not a "tourist destination". It will be great for people who just want to get away in the quiet. We are located about an hour from the property.

Also, if you were starting over again, would you use the AirBnB platform or would you build your own website and use that?

Any helpful hints for new hosts would be appreciated.
