Managing credit card account
I have read the doc on credit cards, even the part "Using a credit card in any budgeting software can be confusing, and Actual is no different." Noob disclaimer. I have just set up and have imported my bank statements for checking, savings and credit card. I have also read the advice to not run credit card balances and I pay mine off every month. Nonetheless the credit card account is a debt that I hold. It is not positive cash.
The thing that does not make sense to me is that the credit card accound shows credit charges as "payments", and when I pay my credit card each month, it shows as a transfer from checking to credit card as a "deposit" in the credit card account.
The net effect of this is that when I look at my account summary in the left rail of the application, it totals up all of my for-budget accounts and the credit card is added to my sum total as a positive number. So checking (100), savings (400), credit card (300) = for-budget total of $800. IMHO, that is wrong. This should show my net cash value of positive accounts (checking, savings = 500) less my debt account (300), so my total cash should be $200 (100+400-300).
I am sure I have not found my first defect in Actual Budget. Can someone please explain the reasoning behind this?
