The rest of the rituals are 100% silent
I agree with what lots of people have been speculating here, that the YJs were found at the worst possible timing and will choose to kill the people who happened upon them.
I was thinking about Lottie saying that this wasn’t how it was “supposed to happen” and then encouraging the others to sing. I think this is a sort of last hurrah of the ritual being a celebration of sorts.
After the birders find them, I think the rituals become much more somber, and more importantly, much more quiet. I think this is how they adapt to the fact that others can and likely will find them: by having the ritual far away from their camp and by literally not speaking a word during it. In the pilot, they only communicate through nods to one another and sit and eat in silence. Even upon discovering put girl in the tiger pit, the one who finds her only takes a deep breath. When they string her up they are silent. The ritual becomes something more furtive to try to control when and how they are discovered.
