Pendulum advice

Does anybody have any advice on how to use a pendulum. I just got a new one and some questions I'm asking are giving a very varied answer? Like it will start to go one way and then change the other way and then do a different way... I don't know how to interpret this or I just have to ask for specific clarification or something? It's a little bit confusing any help is appreciated.
