Bought car from dealer; still no permanent license plate yet

Hello all, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a car from a New Jersey dealer one month ago and would register in New York.

They gave me a 30 days temporary plate, which just expires.

I called the dealer and they told me the license plate was still in process at DMV. They also told me I could drive my car and they would reimburse me for the ticket if I get caught.

I just don’t trust them. I asked them to refund me and I would go to register by myself but the dealer said they already started the process.
