Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel

As a part of our roadtrip around Iceland on mid April of this year, we need to go through the Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel (I know I have to pay the fee in advance), but I have noticed on google maps that there is a secondary road above the tunnel (named 832). My question is wether this alternative road is a safe option in mid april or if road conditions are not secured and instead the best option is to take the tunnel. What would you guys recomend us?
