Using GI bill for pilots licensing?

I’m dead set on becoming a pilot for my career and want to use my GI bill to get my credentials for flying but I’m a little confused as how to use it because I’ve been told I can’t use it to outright pay for the licenses. Do I have to go through a public college that offers pilot programs? Has anyone went this route or have any advice?
