UC Berkeley VS University of Edinburgh for International Student
Although I've already accepted my offer from Cal (kinda had to rip, but I can still afford to pull out), I recently received my offer from University of Edinburgh. I'm an international student (from India) and I'd be looking to work during my UG years to account for finances- bit tight on that. These are the course offerings:
UC Berkeley- intended MCB major (maybe pre-med?)
U of Edinburgh- BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences (Development, Regeneration and Stem Cells)
I've done my fair bit of research, but most of its just left me even more confused than before. The people around me have told me that UCB is probably a better choice since it has more research opportunities available in the my field of interest (genomics/neurobio), and that its name, prestige, and faculty is WAYYYY higher than Edinburgh's.
Yet, I'm still unsure because of all I've heard about Cal- mostly with regards to the crime around/in campus, the grade deflation, large student population that makes it difficult to approach profs, difficulty getting research opportunities, crazy difficult weeder STEM classes and cut-throat competition.
Edinburgh, on the other hand, is cold (not a deciding factor, but well-), also has the name & prestige, is surprisingly ranked higher than Cal in the QS rankings(?), is apparently more racist (?), and isn't really good for research according to a few sources I've heard from (My uncle who lives in London claims that its good, but research positions/projects are hard to get into in the UK and hence Cal would be better). I've tried looking this up but there isn't much information on Edinburgh (reddit/student experience wise, atleast). Furthermore, I still don't have a good grasp on Edinburgh's social life, and would love to know more if ya'll have anything to add on that front.
Tldr; I need to decide between the two once and for all, cause I want my undergrad experience as an international student to be worthwhile ( I dont wanna have a massive burnout basically) and while I might end up regretting whatever choice I skip out on, I would love to minimize that regret. Any help/opinion is appreciated. Thanks
