I Really Don’t Like the Anime Now…
I began reading Undead Unluck when it was first coming out a couple years ago. I read weekly for about the first 6 or 7 weeks but got busy with other stuff. As time went on, I forgot about it.
I finally came back and watched the anime last week and I liked it a lot! The series felt like it had lots of potential and I liked the characters a lot. As soon as I caught up, I read the manga and now I’m all caught up.
The manga helped me realize just how sloppy the anime is. So many flashbacks to previous episodes and so many scenes that are improperly represented make it feel passable at best. Especially when compared to the anime. One moment in particular I got confused on is episode 19.
In this episode Fuuko is trying to get on the phone with Anno Un and she asks the reviewer nicely if she could borrow the phone and then Andy basically teleports in and walks menacingly towards the manga reviewer and threatens to take the phone. The manga reviewer doesn’t even acknowledged Andy’s sudden presence. When I was watching, I thought i missed a scene and rewound to find that Andy is just suddenly there. It’s so weird. I checked the manga to see how it was there and then I saw Fuuko literally swipes the phone and pulls a gun out on the reviewer.
Why This Scene Matters: To me, the reason why a scene like this is important is that it shows that Fuuko is capable of handling herself and getting the job done. After the end of the 100th loop we really see Fuuko truly step into her strength and become one of the most reliable and strongest characters in the whole series This scene in the manga is one of the earliest moments where Fuuko takes matters into her own hands to get the job done. It’s such a wild moment that you don’t expect it, but it matches her character well because early on, she is the Wild Card character. Her Unluck is relatively unpredictable and you don’t know when and how she will come up clutch. This was one of those scenes that’s so wild you don’t expect it, but it matches her character nicely
1st Chapter: If I’m honest, this one is more of a nitpick, but the scene setting is tremendously better in the manga especially in chapter one. In the anime, Fuuko is going to kill herself and nobody is there to see it. This makes the world feel empty and as thus making her attempt feel relatively inconsequential. The manga allows you to feel the weight of her action a bit more. Having other people in the world persuade Fuuko to not commit this act, and seeing Andy suffer Fuuko’s Unluck makes the scene feel much more lively. Not to mention, her conversations with these civilians helps better convey just how disgusted Fuuko is with her life and her body. All-in-all the manga conveys emotion MUCH better.
TL;DR - the anime suffers by not invoking the emotion of the anime and ridding of good character moments
