Advice on deciding among Tudors?
I have around $5k saved for a watch and I'm between these three Tudors. I'm not asking someone to just tell me which one to get; I'm asking how to decide!! I love each one of them for different reasons.
My wrist size is around 16 cm (6.3 inches) and I'm 5'10" in height.
First, let me get into my current collection, so you can see where things fit):
Longines Spirit Zulu Time 39mm L3.802.4.53.6 (ss, black dial)
Nomos Tangenete 33mm ref 122
Omega Seamaster 2553.41 Jacques Mayol (vintage 36mm green dial)
Tag Heuer 3000 934.413 Midsize (vintage)
I adore all of these. The Longines is really my daily. The Nomos is my dress watch. The Seamaster is obviously awesome. The Tag might be my favorite, depending on the day; I love a rare and obscure little thing and it really scratches that itch.
I'm a bit outdoorsy – I love a good day out in the woods, or exploring tide pools, stuff like that, I spend most days indoors working, but I also travel to conferences and give presentations. Because of the nature of my work, my schedule is flexible and can be spontaneous, and I really value being able to go into work in the morning and then getting scuffed up outside in the afternoon, and not having to worry about the transition. I love canvas sneakers that can take a beating and still look great, or my trusty Blundstone boots that can move with me seamlessly. I think the Longines just can't really keeping being my daily though, it's too sharp looking.
So I'm between the three in the photo. Here are my reactions to them:
BB54: I like the small size (evidenced by my small Nomos and Tag pieces), I really appreciate the vintage inspiration I think that's awesome, and I think this is just an all around good option. It's a nice piece and can stand out or be under the radar depending on how you wear it.
Pelagos 39: I put this piece on for the first time a few months ago and definitely had that "love at first sight" reaction. It's just an awesome piece and I love how it feels and how it looks on my wrist. I actually really like the sunburst effect. I worry about the bezel indices falling off, since I see people talking about that. Also, it feels a little flashier than the BB54.
Pelagos FXD black: This thing is SO cool. I tried the blue on first and thought it looked too big on me. A month later I tried on the black and was super excited about it. Obviously, I'm almost outsized on it, and it looks big on me – but I actually think that's pretty fun. Definitely less versatile, though. But maybe doesn't need to be, since it's filling a certain void in my collection? I really love the story behind it and how robust it feels. It feels like it can get beat up and that's the spirit of it. Kind of like my Blundstones!
To me, this boils down to a gradient from a safe bet that covers all my bases to something that really excited me but is more risky and not very versatile. I think the BB54 is great, I don't think I would be unhappy with it. I kind of feel like for both the BB54 and Pelagos 39, equally, that I would occasionally wish I got the other one, depending on the day and what I was doing. But I definitely had that love-at-first-sight reaction to the Pelagos 39, and did again the second time I tried it, that makes me thing I should go for that one. But the Pelagos FXD black really sticks in my head like wow that's just such a cool watch.
A few other details. I love a black dial, not a fan of blue dials. Given my interests, is it really worth waiting for Watches and Wonders in April? Everyone is talking about a blue Pelagos 39mm as a possibility, or a Prince Chronograph, but neither of those appeal to me at all. Both the BB54 and BB58 fit me well, but I'm less enthused by the BB58 because I feel like everyone has it; again, I like uncommon things. I don't like chronographs, I really like divers and pilots. I like GMTs, but I don't like how thick they are, so I'm much more picky with those.
So, how should I decide?! Do I go with my head, my heart, or my fixation? How have you decided??
Also if some other watch leaps to your mind reading this, I'd be interested to hear that, too!
Thanks in advance!!
