What happened to the boy band era?

I'm mostly a rock/metal fan, but this was when pop music peaked according to me. Blue, Backstreet Boys and NSYNC have so many catchy songs its not even funny. Even the girl groups such as Destiny's Child/Spice Girls had tons of bangers. But where did they go wrong? Why did boy bands making English songs come to an end? (The K-Pop ones are still around but I'm not a very big fan of them)

(Although 1D's popularity wave in the early 2010 set the stage for a comeback of this kind of stuff, no other prominent acts emerged. Why?)
