Assassins Creed Shadows: can't launch offline

I bought this game to play on an international holiday. Especially for the long flights.

But I can't launch the game off-line... I know ubisoft are cunts for this kind of thing but am fuming I can't play this steam deck verified game without a connection...

Has anyone gotten around anything like this before or am I just fucked?
