The erroneous portrayals of brown women on western media stems from Western jealousy
I was recently rewatching some dance clips from Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire and I thought of how unfair it was that Hermione Granger character, Fleur, Cho Chang were all dressed exquisitely while the Parvati twins were sloppily dressed in some part city version of what was meant to appear as indian lenghas. I’ve seen indian actresses from India in the most exquisite beautiful dresses and jewelry when they style themselves.
I was left aghast at how awfully they styled the Parvati twin characters. Those actresses are beautiful brown women and they were intentionally done wrong by westerners. I also noticed this same theme occurring with iranian actresses and Arab actresses in the west, Hollywood would do them no justice such as the way Golshifteh Farhani was styled in the movie Body Of Lies. It’s like the west only wants to portray White, East Asian and Latina women as attractive.
As a central Asian mixed iranian brown child this impacted me a lot and drove home a point that according to Hollywood and Europe and the rest of the world, brown women from the Middle East, India and the central Asian region were considered the least attractive. At the time I chalked it up to them not looking physically beautiful because of the western portrayal and I was just a kid. It gave me body dysmorphia issues. I developed self hatred in some ways.
But now that I’m older I see that it’s the western media that is so jealous of brown beauty. Brown women are some of the most stunningly beautiful women I’ve ever laid my eyes on, the most loyal types of women, the most giving and heartfelt from India to the Middle East. And now I only feel disgust at western portrayal of us. They hate on us because they see in us the beautiful qualities they lack themselves. They will doll White actresses up even in scenes it is uncalled for while they dull down or mute out the beauty of brown actresses. I wished brown actresses working in Hollywood could get together to raise awareness against this unfair treatment.
