Is Amaterasu Ōmikami a mother like figure to the Japanese People?

I'm a Hindu in my religion the Goddesses are revered as motherly figure to every devotee. Is the same true in Shinto Religion? Since Goddess Amaterasu is a major deity in Shinto i want to know how people see her as.
