iMark And The Death Of Innocence
We initially see innie Mark as an appendage of outie Mark rather than a fully formed human. Much in the same way a child is not seen as capable and understanding as adults. The more dysfunctional parental relationships the more they seem to reduce a child's agency.
Even though innie Mark has all the outwardly perceivable qualities of an adult he has an undeniable naivety.
The first season showed him almost coming to an understanding that Lumon, this overbearing paternal father figure in innie Mark's life is fallible and has its own desires and wants; some that might not align with his. The same way a child grows up and recognises that their parents are more than just their parents, they are ultimately people with lives outside father or mother.
The second season saw another naivety for innie Mark crushed. That he trusted that outie Mark would always go back down the elevator. There was no reason for innie Mark to believe this, yet he did. As children we are blank and look for those closest to us for guidance, overtime it becomes a given that they are positive forces. This person is trusted and I will listen to what they have to say. There is nothing innie Mark trusted more than that outie Mark would return to the elevator and allow him to live. However, the little betrayals that form the cracks in this belief... "reintegration for us" are what give way to an understanding that even those who are most trusted can have alterior motives. That caused innie Mark to rebel against outie Mark.
We'll never know if events would have been different if outie Mark had treated innie Mark with more of the respect and honesty the outie Dylan treated innie Dylan. But I imagine he would have felt more empathetic over leaving Gemma and less elated about his actions.
