John Turturro may have spoiled oIrving's motivation against Lumon.
Turturro did an interview with the Hollywood Reporter yesterday which you can read here:
But here's the relevant part:
Q. It’s fascinating because we learned a lot about Outie Irving this season, but mostly through action, barely through information. There’s so much happening with him that even now, we have no idea.
A.Yes, Irving knows a lot that you don’t know. There’s a big reason why he’s making all those paintings, you know? All that he’s searching for. Everyone gets severed on this show for different reasons. Grief, maybe they’re lost, maybe they’re the daughter of the owner. Maybe it’s also searching for someone, too.
Grief being Mark, lost being Dylan, daughter of the owner being Helly, so who is Irving looking for? We know he's been painting the hallway that leads to the elevator of the testing floor. We also know that Gemma is her unsevered self on that floor until she goes into one of the designated rooms. Is oIrving hoping that by leading his innie to the hallway, his innie will go down the elevator and his unsevered self will wake up on the testing floor?
The show has implied that Irving may have had prior military experience. Is he hoping to attack someone on the testing floor, like that a-hole doctor always working with Gemma? OR, is he hoping to break someone out of there? From Petey's description in season one, Gemma might not be the only person being held down there against their will.
I've got my own personal theory on who Irving might be trying to find, but I'm curious to what you guys think before I speak of my own theory.
