Key street through downtown Sacramento converting to two-way traffic

Downtown Sacramento will soon have one less one-way street.

Drivers heading down 5th St. may have started seeing changes as the thoroughfare gets converted from one-way to two-way traffic this summer.

The one-way streets have long confused visitors or first-time drivers in the area, with almost daily instances of vehicles going down the wrong direction.

It’s a sentiment several downtown passersby told FOX40.com as we toured the area.

One person said they don’t like the one-way streets because when a driver gets confused and heads down the wrong direction, “things can happen.”

Another person said, “It’s probably better to have two-way streets because a lot of people avoid coming to downtown Sacramento because they are afraid of the one-way streets… They get lost a lot.”

Do the one ways cause people to get lost? What I see is the same scenario each time: Driver on autopilot turns into a one way. The oh fuck moment comes. People honk. Driver awkwardly turns into a driveway or parking space hoping no one sees (everyone sees). Then Driver course corrects while everyone stares, also called Cersei’s Drive of Shame.

No one is lost I think. That said, I’m down with fewer one ways!
