Sick of the Lolita Discourse!!
Is it ever going to be possible to have a normal conversation about Lolita? I was recommended a post by the general book sub about how this reader was SHOCKED that people buy into Humbert that they always knew he was "a fucking creep". Or when I've tried to talk to other people about it I've been told that the book was triggering for them. Why is our cultural sensibility so marred by good-evil didactic finger wagging. Why is relatability or morality the only axis by which we judge literature (maybe not in this circle but generally culturally). Even though the form of the novel compels the reader to judge as part of a jury, why is it discursively difficult to delve deeper into the text. What did Lolita mean to you? Where does it fall in your list of Nabokov's works?
