What do you think is the most underrated moment/scene of the series?
On this sub we've obviously over-analyzed every polin moment of the whole series, but some definitely get more attention than others. What is one moment or scene that you think is amazing, but doesn't get the same love/attention the heavy hitter scenes do (i.e. the what a barb scene, carriage scene, the mirror scene)? Doesn't have to be polin-related or from season 3.
There are a few for me, but for each season, my first instinct is:
Season 1: Their first interaction in episode 1, as he and Marina's other gentleman callers are leaving. It's a short moment, but one that I love. We get to see a milder version of Chaos Colin. Chaos Colin LiteTM, if you will! Portia's like "do not forget to bid Prudence, Philippa, or even Penelope farewell as you go", and Colin literally zooms right past Prudence and Philippa and goes to have a little jokey-joke with his bestie. He actually couldn't have been any closer to Prudence and Philippa as he walked by, but instead of nodding or acknowledging them in any way, he fully ignored them and went right to Penelope. They even curtsied as he walked by and he didn't spare them a single glance. It's actually so rude, but so quintessentially Chaos Colin to zone in on Pen like that. I always got the vibe from this scene that he was just waiting for that guy to finish his horrible poem so that he could go joke about it with Pen. He doesn't even acknowledge Eloise lol. He's just excited to joke with her--and this is our first instance of "I seek you out at every social assembly"! Also (and this is a conversation for a whole other post), this is our first piece of evidence against the objectively incorrect assertion that Colin didn't really see Penelope prior to season 3. Colin has always seen Pen. He may not have seen her the way she wanted (or at least, he didn't realize that's how he saw her), but he's always seen her. In fact, he was one of the only people to ever see her before season 3. Everyone else in the room ignored her, her mom barely acknowledged her, but Colin was most excited to walk over and share a little quip with her.
Look at that grin!! Boy was down bad long before he had any inkling why.
Season 2: In 2x02, I'm obsessed with the moment where they are at that horse event thing and Pen's trying to be discrete by walking in his direction but pretending not to notice him. Meanwhile, Colin sees her and fully lights up, calls her name, and immediately abandons whatever conversation he was just having to go talk to her. Another instance of "I seek you out at every social assembly". He was so excited to talk to her! This is their first proper conversation in person since the letters and you can't tell me Colin's heart isn't all aflutter seeing his beloved pen-pal (pun fully intended lol). He visibly lights up when he sees and her and just spends the whole scene smiling fondly at her.
Season 3: The sweets tent scene in 3x03. I absolutely adore this whole scene, and I feel like it doesn't get talked about as much as some of the other polin scenes from the season, but it is perfection. I love every part of it:
- Pen waving him over;
- Him immediately abandoning Benedict mid-sentence to follow;
- The look on Colin's face when she says "pretend to be loitering for sweets, so nobody suspects we are speaking together";
- The fact that he totally ignores that and is all up in her personal space the whole time;
- His face when she says his lessons worked;
- The way he's seething with jealousy when Pen talks about Debling (especially when she says he's not unpleasant to gaze upon); and (of course)
- When he loses his mind and stares at her like a horny teenager while she's eating that pastry.
Meanwhile, Pen is totally oblivious to his struggles and is just excitedly telling him that his advice is working. Her innocent little face asking if she has sugar on her while Colin is losing it cracks me up every time.
I also love the way LN delivers the line "good luck" at the end, in such a soft voice. Like he wants the best for her, but he wants the best to be him. The whole scene is perfection.
