How do you click the touch pad?

I’m clicking the screen and it shows me 2 white squares next to both my thumbs. But clicking them does nothing. I did double click and long pressed but that does nothing as well.

I’m currently playing Alan wake 2 and the touch pad is a critical mechanic in the game. You literally can’t advance the story without it.

I tried to search for an online manual but no luck. Am I doing something wrong?
