Sons of The Forest online question

Is it possible to play online via online fix with someone with a legit copy of this game? I downloaded it off fitgirl with onlinefix, installed the updates, but in the game it shows "disconnected with steam servers". Can i do anything to fix it and play with others? The steam overlay doesn't show that i'm playing anything, i can't connect to any servers
