Annabeth is being stereotyped..

In the show, Annabeth was cast as an African-American woman, which is perfectly okay, as it reflects how Book Annabeth also broke a stereotype of being considered lesser, or dumb (i.e. blonde California white girl, just naming the stereotype, not that she was born in Cali).

The show had so much potential to show this stereotype, highlight it, because Rick didn't in the first book, give her as much character development and story and arc as any of the other characters. That's what true diversity and inclusion is...

But I feel like in the show the stereotype has been disproven to a point of extremity.. she's just been used so much as a girl that knows EVERYTHING, I feel like they're (Disney) afraid of making a Black girl seem dumb or naive, or even afraid (spiders)...

I've seen so much discourse today, especially on Instagram, defending the fact that Annabeth would know who they're going against, like Procrustes, no matter what, because she's "the smartest demigod." But that really leaves out so much of her character, especially her fatal flaw, hubris.

Annabeth's hubris makes her human, she may be a smart demigod, but she thinks she can do better or is better than the gods themselves.

In the show, she has been given NO space to be wrong, and it's illogical and detrimental to her character to treat her like this. Her being wrong, her having a fear of spiders, her wanting to prove herself, it's all a part of her core character, and I feel like the show has done her horribly.

SHE IS 12 YEARS OLD. She's on her first quest ever, I understand they want to make her seem knowledgeable, but the way they're going about it makes it seem like she's TLO Annabeth, with 4 years of experience under her belt, in the field.

At Medusa's, I understand that they knew from the get-go that made sense.

But Procrustes is such an obscure myth and her knowing what it is immediately and sending Percy in to expo-dump just plainly was stupid of the writers.

Leah is such an amazing actress, but if they keep treating her character like this, I wouldn't be surprised if she tells Percy not to fall for Circe's tricks in SOM.
