I've always hated effects like film grain/chromatic aberration. But while playing The Order 1886 I reevaluated my judgment
I'm mesmerized by the art direction and atmosphere of this game which heavily utilizes effects like film grain, chromatic aberration, motion blur, and lens distortion in addition to black bars. It's like watching a movie. This is proof that if a game is designed with these effects the game can really be impressive. There are too many games these days that force these effects (which you can fortunately turn off) in disastrous ways. A game from 10 years ago, however, shows that you need to know how to use these effects.
