Are Teachers Allowed to Take Full Week Vacations During the School Year?

I’m trying to understand how teachers are allowed to take full-week vacations during the school year, especially to tropical destinations—not just a day off here and there, but an actual extended vacation. Or can they extend their Christmas or March breaks to have additional vacation?

Is this something that’s school-driven, decided by the school board, or up to the principal? I always thought it was frowned upon and that teachers weren’t supposed to take vacations like that while school is in session. Can someone explain how this works?

Honestly curious and also wanted to hear your experiences or thoughts.
